Holiday Hangover

The end of 2014 is approaching and we have very strange weather here in NY. My son was outside playing basketball the last few days. Sadly, we did not have a white Christmas. It has been a busy few months and I am trying to get back into a semblance of a routine, but still have to get through New Years this week. Holidays always have me spinning in circles. On the up side it means more time with my husband and family we don't see often enough. Sadly, we lost my father-in-law just before Thanksgiving, so this season has been bittersweet.

Thanksgiving Turkey

I just wanted to share this photo that my son took because my cute little dog photo bombed the turkey. Poor little thing was hoping some would fall on the floor.

"Three Rules" Is Becoming An Audio Book

I am in the process of getting "Three Rules" produced as an audio book. I had several auditions by narrators to produce it and picked my favorite. Today, I am listening to the first fifteen minutes of the book. It is strange and exhilarating to hear someone else read the words I wrote. Very exciting! I think I picked the perfect person to read it; it sounds great. :)

Singer Castle on Dark Island

My husband wins many things from radio contests, but the trip to Singer Castle has to be one of my very favorites. They give tickets away every year on a local radio station for the boat tour and castle tour through Uncle Sam's Boat Tours. He won this trip a few times, and we have brought different friends along to share the experience and have always enjoyed it - most recently this month. He even won the grand prize a couple years ago for an overnight stay in this castle. That was AMAZING! If you ever get a chance to check out the Thousand Islands, I'd recommend you tour Singer Castle.

Readers' Favorite Book Reviews and Awards 5 Star Review For "Three Rules"

Book Review Mini-Critique

Below you will find ratings (scale of 1-5) with descriptions for the major parts of your book
followed by your Readers' Favorite review. Although these are general ratings we hope they
will give you an insight into how others may view the different components of your book.
These are the opinions of your reviewer, and although your reviewer is not an expert literary critic or professional editor, they are at the very least, an avid reader of books just like yours.

Title: Three Rules
Author: Marie Drake
Genre: Fiction - Suspense

Appearance: (5)
The appearance of a book can make a significant impact on the
experience of a reader, whose enjoyment is often enhanced by an
enticing cover, an intriguing table of contents, interesting chapter
headings, and when possible, eye-catching illustrations.

Plot: (5)
The characters of a book should be well defined with strengths and
flaws, and while they do not have to be likable, the reader does have
to be able to form a connection with them. The tone should be
consistent, the theme should be clear, and the plot should be original
or told from a unique perspective. For informative books--those
without plot and characters--this rating refers primarily to your concept
and how well you presented it.

Development: (5)
Development refers to how effectively you told your story or discussed
your topic. The dialogue should be realistic, the descriptions should be
vivid, and the material should be concise and coherent. Organization is
also a key factor, especially for informative books--those without plot
and characters. The order in which you tell your story or explain your
topic and how smoothly it flows can have a huge impact on the
reader’s understanding and enjoyment of the material.

Formatting: (5)
Formatting is the single most overlooked area by independent authors.
The way in which you describe scenes, display dialogue, and shift point
of view can make or break your story. In addition, excessive
grammatical errors and typos can give your book an amateurish feel
and even put off readers completely.

Marketability: (5)
Marketability refers to how effectively you wrote your book for your
target audience. Authors may include content that is above or below
the understanding of their target reader, or include concepts, opinions
or language that can accidentally confuse or alienate some readers.
Although by its nature this rating is very subjective, a very low rating
here and poor reviews may indicate an issue with your book in this
area.

Overall Opinion: (5)
The overall starred rating takes into account all these elements and
describes the overall reading experience of your reviewer. This is the
official Readers’ Favorite review rating  for your book.

Review:

Reviewed by Suzanne Cowles for Readers' Favorite

The book is simply titled Three Rules, but the story that leads to the
formation of the rules is tragic, although the ending is not a tragedy.
That is how complex the plot woven by author Marie Drake, who tells a
fictional tale of her own personal suffering and life experiences. With
courage to talk about a closed-door subject and a will to break the
cycle of abuse, we follow main character Hope as she attends her
stepfather’s funeral. The opening sets the tone of a dreadful saga
where Hope’s past haunts her; she is plagued by horrific nightmares
and feels worthless, controlled and paranoid. Hope needs closure but
can’t get it and panic attacks ensue. The secret is disturbing and the
silence is soul crushing, yet the weight of the truth squelches her voice.
Nevertheless, despite all this, in the end the truth is set free. With the
help of her psychiatrist and the endearing love of a childhood friend,
Hope has promise for a fresh start free of the chains that had bound
her heart.
The most powerful aspect of this book is the Three Rules: the harsh
reality that sexual abuse is often by someone known and trusted,
surviving violence only to be victimized another day is worse than
death, and that negative events can change who we are into a
monster. Those things are evident as Hope experiences them
firsthand. This is a well-crafted story where Marie Drake’s talent and
passion for writing comes through. It is inspiring that her memories of
pain and anger toward the abuser could be transformed into a positive
and entertaining creation. Marie Drake’s Three Rules is an unexpected
gem, devoid of graphic offense yet spine tingling enough to disturb.

Vacation 2014

My husband and I were very fortunate to be able to take all four of our boys on vacation to Pennsylvania where we met up with my sister and her family. We visited the Central Market where every kind of food imaginable could be found. and they were giving away roses for free.

We visited the MorningStar Flea Market, which was the biggest flea market I had ever seen.

The Lake Tobias Wildlife Park and Safari was wonderful! I recommend it - for only $12/person it was affordable and fun family entertainment. You ride in a bus that has the top cut off, and the animals walk right up to it so you can feed them crackers or popcorn. After the safari is done, you can walk around the rest of the park to see the other zoo type animals, and there is a petting zoo full of adorable smaller animals you can go inside to interact with and feed.

We spent every afternoon/evening at Gifford Pinchot State Park picnicking and swimming with the family. A beautiful park with shaded picnic area and a clean inviting swimming spot was FREE for day use to the public. We couldn't go wrong!

We spent the last day of our vacation which was also my husband's birthday in Baltimore. We took the tour of Camden Yards - because my husband is an Orioles fan. It was about a 90 minute tour that went behind the scenes and gave a lot of interesting information.

We also toured the inner harbor. What a beautiful city.

And our kids loved riding these paddle boats while we watched from the dock.

I am sad that the vacation is over but so glad I was able to spend time with my sister and her family.

Relief

For the last fifteen years I have been dealing with a plethora of issues stemming from thyroid dysfunction. After my son was born, doctors diagnosed me with it and I was extremely sick for about two years. I was on medication until my thyroid hormone levels were in the range considered 'normal'. Then I was taken off the medication and monitored to be sure it stayed that way. Unfortunately, it did. I say 'unfortunately' because if they are in the 'normal' range, but the symptoms don't disappear - you're really out of luck.
I have been back and forth to have those levels checked many times over the years and it always shows up normal. Too bad the headaches, fatigue, various skin conditions, extra weight, muscle and joint pain with tendonitis, high cholesterol, depression, insomnia, anxiety, and general malaise didn't get that memo. I was stuck with them. Doctors had me on a diet and exercise plan. When you already suffer from anxiety and depression on top of fatigue and you have to work out an hour every day - never to feel or see any results - this does NOT make you feel better. But I kept on going... because if I didn't, it only got worse. WORSE. I had to do all the work just so I wouldn't feel worse and gain weight. Ugh.
But I finally came to the last straw a couple of months ago. It was making my hair fall out, clumps of hair. Come on - really? So, I had to get over 10 inches cut off. I had grown my hair out for the first time in a while, it was a little traumatic. So, I talked to a lot of people who have suffered with the same problem, searched for any answers and suggestions I could find, consulted several people I know in the medical community and now - I have been on a new regimen for almost six weeks of several vitamins and supplements (none of which are weight loss products) and I think it is working. I felt it after the first week, but didn't want to jinx myself. I hope it continues. I haven't changed my exercise routine, and I am not 'dieting', yet I lost 8 pounds. It is almost impossible for me to lose weight, or at least it feels that way. I am sleeping better at night, feel more energy during the day and just feel better in general. I am so happy to finally have some relief. I cross my fingers, knock on wood, and pray that it continues to be effective.

Busy Busy Weekend

I had a wonderfully busy weekend. I spent Friday night with my incredibly talented husband at kareoke. That man can sing, be still my heart. Saturday morning we worked around the house, and then caught the Bruins game on tv. Die hard Bruins fan = my husband. Saturday night we went out to dinner and then did our grocery shopping. Sunday morning, dropped off our son for his school trip, headed for my nephew's first birthday party. A room full of toddlers - who wouldn't love that? Then, last night we caught the Brian Regan comedy act at Crouse Hinds Theater. It was AMAZING. I laughed so hard my stomach hurt. Here is a
you tube clip if you care to check out some of his work.

Netflix

There will be many moans and groans when the Netflix selection arrives this week. The next DVD in the series we are currently watching as a family is unavailable... so Netflix goes to the next available DVD in your list that is not in that series. Well, I haven't looked at or organized that list for a while - so my house full of men will be stuck watching a sappy girl movie...  yes, they will be watching it with me, lol. Hey, I watch enough sports, beat em up/ blow em up/ shoot em up action movies and some preeetttty strange comedic films for them.

Changing Up Easter

My family did something new this year for the holiday. I usually spend the day cooking a huge feast and then cleaning up afterward. This year we decided we'd go to Applebees for a relaxed dinner. I will admit, I had never previously eaten at Applebees. The meals were affordable, they have a special selection of delicious meals that are 2/$20 which include a very generous sized house salad. I had the CHICKEN & SHRIMP TEQUILA TANGO pictured above. It was awesome. They also have a "brownie bite" dessert offered for only $1.00. A small brownie and scoop of vanilla ice cream drizzled with chocolate sauce. The perfect sized portion to top off the meal. I was very happy.

If you ever get a chance to see this group- I recommend doing so. My husband and I had an awesome time at their concert Friday night. They did a marvelous job. They were also friendly and courteous with the crowd during and after the event. They even posed for silly photos for my husband.

I Remember Who I Was

A poem I wrote many years ago, long before I finished "Three Rules", but the sentiment aligns with the novel.

I Remember Who I Was

I remember who I was,

Alone in a dark place and scared,

So strong for someone so fragile,

Quietly raging, silent anger,

Steady but still unstable,

Getting past the dark,

Willing but unable.

I know who I am now,

Independent and Mature,

Intelligent and thoughtful,

Building a family, a career,

Loved and valued and not so alone,

A light shining through,

so in the dark I see,

The glow of forgiveness,

Can I embrace it and let it wash over me?

I dream of who I will be,

In the many years to come,

Truly happy and mended,

All the pieces become one,

The darkness extinguished

The fear forever banished

Light of love lead me to

These days of the future

Let me not stumble backward

To who I remember

Hockey Hysteria

SO, my husband won tickets to the Syracuse Crunch Hockey Game for Saturday night. That was the good news. The bad news...  it seems I have been under too much pressure and stress lately because I broke out in hives all over my body, it started with a little bit of itching Friday night, and was full blown when I woke up on Saturday morning. I was a trooper though and we still went to the hockey game. Even though we got twenty minutes away from home and had to turn around because hubby forgot the tickets in his other jacket, and we were stuck in nearly stand still traffic on the highway for about a half hour becaue the "Monster Jam" monster truck rally was also in town, making us barely get there in time. The reason we were anxious about getting there on time - My husband was also the grand prize winner. I got to watch him on the ice during intermission trying to win a new car by making 16 goals with 20 pucks and 20 seconds. He made a great effort, ran out of time before he shot all 20, but still got some cool consolation prizes.

Apprehension

"Lurking, lying in wait like a predator, it conjures up a fog; my apprehension is causing me to mistrust everything around me. Through that fog, I discern the form of my tormentor. At the top of that form are glowing blue eyes, not with the mischief captured in family photos, but with mayhem – the mayhem that is going to be unleashed on my world that I have no power to stop. I shake my head as the fog dissipates, slowly rolling away, taking with it into the night the shapes that disturb me. I'm losing my mind..."

Wishes

"I open my hand and force a smile, step to the fountain and close my eyes. I make my wish – the same wish I'd always made – and squeeze my eyes tighter, release the coins, and hear the plunk as they hit.
Opening my eyes to watch them sink, slowly swaying from side to side, they submerge under the glowing surface of the water. Descending lower and lower, they finally rest at the bottom – among hundreds of other coins – featured in spotlight effects created by the reflection of the lamps. What wishes do those coins represent? New cars? Better jobs? Marriage Proposals? A kiss from that special someone who can't be expelled from daydreams? Those are not the things I'd ever wish for..."

Crushed

"Crushed and unable to breathe, still enveloped in the sunshine with my eyes wide open to the beautiful sky and the colorful swaying tree tops far above me, I'm experiencing the paralyzing horror of those pitch black scenes from past nightmares. Daylight won't protect me. Nothing will save me. It's an omen; even when I think I'm beyond danger, I will not be safe. I feel it as sure as I feel the sun; I will never escape." ~ Excerpt from "Three Rules" by Marie Drake

Fear

"Continuing on, disoriented in fear, I bolt in the wrong direction. The ground crunches below me; twigs and branches reach out to tug at my clothes and hair, clawing at my skin as I frantically brush them away. I'm finding it difficult to move with shaking limbs, my whole body vibrating with terror. My churning stomach collapses on itself making me want to double over and drop to my knees. I'm not going to make it back to my parents' house..."
